George Street Upgrade: Building a safer, greener, more vibrant future for Norwood
11/11/2025
Exciting changes are taking shape along George Street! The George Street Upgrade is moving full steam ahead — on time and on track — to deliver a stunning new streetscape with wider, accessible footpaths, trees and garden beds, improved lighting, and inviting public spaces. This transformation is all about creating a place where people can meet, stay and connect.
Construction began in early September 2025 and is being rolled out in four carefully planned stages to minimise disruption and maintain access for residents and businesses.
Progress you can see
The journey started in Harris Street, where essential new stormwater drainage infrastructure was installed—an important step toward improving local stormwater management and supporting long-term sustainability for the precinct.
“We’re thrilled to see such strong progress,” says Project Manager, Stuart Pope.
“Despite a few unexpected bumps along the way—such as wet weather and some hidden underground surprises—our dedicated team has worked closely with contractors and stakeholders to keep things moving smoothly and on budget.”
The first stage, focused on Harris Street, is now complete. While there were temporary traffic changes, pedestrian and property access were maintained throughout, and full access to Harris Street and the Webbe Street car park has now been restored.

What’s next
Stage 2 is already progressing as planned, stretching from Wall Street to Webbe Street on the eastern side of George Street (adjacent to Parade Central). This phase includes new drainage, kerbing and driveways—soon to be followed by fresh paving and vibrant green landscaping.
Meanwhile, works from Webbe Street to The Parade are well underway and scheduled for completion in early December 2025. Just like previous stages, this section will deliver upgraded infrastructure, paving and new greenery.
To support local traders, construction will pause during the Christmas trading period (6 December 2025 – 2 January 2026), making it easier for everyone to enjoy The Parade’s festive atmosphere and tick off the Christmas shopping lists.
Supporting our community
The Council and project team are dedicated to keeping George Street open, safe and accessible throughout the works. Advance notice, clear signage and regular updates ensure businesses can continue trading and pedestrians can move easily around the precinct.
The Parade Masterplan: A vision in action
The George Street Upgrade marks Stage 1 of the bold and inspiring Parade Masterplan—a long-term vision endorsed by Council in 2019 to celebrate and strengthen The Parade’s unique character.
Once complete, the upgraded precinct will invite people to linger longer, with spaces perfect for outdoor dining, social gatherings and easy pedestrian movement.
It’s all part of creating a safer, greener, more sustainable and more connected Norwood for generations to come.
