Every woman deserves this: Inside the Hackney Road sanctuary redefining relaxation

Over the years, Narelle Moore has had a number of different careers.

She has run a cafe, worked as a life coach and helped women with menopause-related health issues.

But the thread that connects every one of those roles is her passion for helping people feel their best.

And when it's her turn to be looked after, she loves nothing more than sitting on her front porch while her husband massages her neck and runs his fingers through her hair.

“It's one of the things that has always calmed me down when I've got a lot going on in my head,” she says.

“It's so relaxing that I just melt, and one evening I was sitting there and I had a simple thought: every woman deserves to feel like this.”

That thought was the inspiration for Heavenly Headspace on Hackney Rd.

Unlike massage therapists who knead clients' muscles, Narelle provides a gentle touch that is designed to create a deep sense of relaxation.

“It's a chance to lie down and do absolutely nothing while your nervous system calms down,” she explains.

Because no other providers offer this type of treatment, there was no training course or accreditation process for Narelle to attend.

Instead, she had to create her own technique from scratch.

In the beginning, she would seat clients in a comfortable chair and apply gentle touch to their head and neck, but she soon found that people became so relaxed they wanted to lie down.

So she added a bed and created several treatments that offer full-body relaxation.

Now Heavenly Headspace offers four packages, from 45-minute sessions focused entirely on the head to two-hour experiences that cover the entire body and include post-treatment refreshments in the sanctuary at Suite 4/5 Hackney Rd.

In addition to her fingers and nails, Narelle uses soft emu feathers to brush over the body and slightly firmer peacock feathers on the face.

“It creates a tingly sensation all over – when they lie down, most people get  goosebumps as soon as I touch their back.”

For now, the business only accepts female clients and most people who come in tell Narelle that it's the most relaxed they've ever felt.

“Half of them even fall asleep,” she says.

“Which is really good, because it shows me how relaxed and safe they feel.

Once you shut that door, the outside world is gone and you don't need to worry about anything.

You're in a space where you can just zone out and not have to think about anything.”

And for Narelle, hearing about the difference she makes in her clients' lives is a reward in itself.
