Tiny treasures, lasting friendships: Celebrating 40 years of the South Australian Miniature Enthusiasts

For 40 years, the South Australian Miniature Enthusiasts (SAME) has been proving that small creations can make a big impact.

As Australia's oldest miniature club, SAME has brought together generations of people who share a passion for collecting, creating, displaying and exchanging miniature treasures.

From intricately furnished dollhouses to handcrafted tiny accessories, members celebrate the artistry, craftsmanship and imagination that make the miniature world so captivating.

A lifelong hobby

Vikki Worth was first inspired to delve into the miniature world when she attended the SAME Annual Festival of Dollhouse Miniatures more than 30 years ago.

“I suddenly realised that I could have a dolls house of my own and enjoy it just for myself, and that I didn’t need to be or have a child to justify having a dolls house. This is a decision I have never regretted and have had hours of fun with ever since.”

A community of creators

For more than 20 years, the group has called the Payneham Community Centre home, gathering each month to share ideas, showcase new projects, learn from one another and, most importantly, enjoy the friendships that have grown through their shared hobby.

“The Payneham Community Centre is an integral part of our group, where we meet monthly to share ideas, and participate in workshops and making sessions, learning new skills and sharing ideas with that help us all to achieve our mini dreams.

“It’s also a central location for all our members and offers all the facilities we need.”

What began as a club for miniature enthusiasts has become a welcoming community where experienced makers and newcomers alike are encouraged to explore their creativity.

Members come from a wide range of backgrounds and interests, united by a fascination with the intricate detail and storytelling that miniatures inspire.

Celebrating 40 years

This year marks a significant milestone as SAME celebrates its 40th anniversary with its 40th Annual Festival of Miniatures and Dollhouses.

“Hopefully visitors to our festival will enjoy what they see and be inspired to join us in following their and our imaginations down whichever path they choose.

“If you can think it, imagine it and visualise it, you can make it come alive.”

Held across the Payneham Library and Community Facilities (Tirkandi) on 8 and 9 August, the festival will showcase remarkable miniature displays, specialist traders, workshops and demonstrations, attracting visitors from across South Australia and beyond.

The festival offers something for everyone, whether you're an experienced collector, an aspiring maker or simply curious to discover the extraordinary craftsmanship behind these tiny worlds.

More than miniatures

For the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, the South Australian Miniature Enthusiasts is a wonderful example of how community groups breathe life into civic spaces.

Their long-standing connection with the Payneham Community Centre highlights the important role local venues play in fostering friendships, lifelong learning and creative expression.
