Norwood scores record boost from AFL Gather Round

AFL Gather Round continues to deliver big wins for Norwood and the wider City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, with new data revealing record spending across the four-day football festival.

According to Spendmapp data, spending across the Council area reached $22.1 million during Gather Round (9 to 12 April 2026), up from $15.9 million over the same period in 2025.

The City's dining and hospitality sector was a major beneficiary, recording $5.51 million in spending, a 16.5% increase on 2025. In Norwood alone, dining and hospitality spending reached $3.23 million, up 12.5% from the previous year and accounting for almost one-third of all spending in the suburb during Gather Round.

A winning result for Norwood

Norwood recorded $10.7 million in total spending across the festival weekend, compared to $7.95 million in 2025, highlighting the growing appeal of Norwood Oval and The Parade as key Gather Round destinations.

Mayor Robert Bria said the results reinforce the City's position as an ideal venue for future AFL games and activations.

"AFL Gather Round has well and truly captured the imagination of footy fans and the community generally, and people clearly enjoy the atmosphere and vibe in Norwood," says Mayor Bria said.

The data also shows interstate visitors played a major role in the record results. Victorian visitors contributed more than $840,000, while fans from Western Australia and New South Wales also generated significant local spending, particularly on match days at Norwood Oval.

Local businesses reap the rewards

For local traders, Gather Round was about more than strong sales. It was an opportunity to showcase Norwood as one of South Australia's leading hospitality and entertainment precincts.

Somma Executive Chef Grant Schooling said the venue embraced the festival atmosphere, from serving hundreds of charcoal-cooked pita pockets to hosting a popular post-match celebration.

"It's getting bigger and better each year," he said. "We're already planning how to take it to a new level next year."

The weekend brought thousands of visitors to The Parade, with fans, families and AFL personalities helping create a vibrant festival atmosphere that benefited businesses throughout the precinct.

The perfect match

Mayor Bria said the scheduling of two AFL matches at Norwood Oval, combined with the Norwood Food & Wine Festival, encouraged visitors to stay longer and explore the precinct.

"This provided opportunities for fans to linger for longer, enjoy the party atmosphere and appreciate the fantastic food and wine in our City," Mayor Bria said.

With Norwood Oval located just moments from The Parade, visitors were able to move seamlessly between games, hospitality venues and festival activities, creating a unique Gather Round experience.

A lasting legacy

Beyond the economic impact, Gather Round continues to support long-term improvements to Norwood Oval through the partnership between Council and the Norwood Football Club.

Recent upgrades include AFL-standard coaches' boxes, a modern media room, a new kiosk, an upgraded interchange bench and a permanent broadcast camera platform, ensuring the venue remains a premier destination for local sport and major events.

With Gather Round secured for the coming years and visitor numbers continuing to grow, the future looks bright for Norwood, its businesses and the broader community.
