Celebrate this festival season on The Parade
21/02/2022
Every summer the Adelaide Fringe and Festival bring the entire city alive with a packed calendar of shows. But you don’t need to head into the city to experience this magical time of the year – with a dozen extraordinary performances to choose from, you can get your fill of music, comedy, dance and theatre right here on The Parade. Here’s everything you need to know.
Norwood Concert Hall
After more than one hundred years, this gorgeous venue is still going strong and this year’s Fringe brings an exceptionally diverse range of acts. Traditional Chinese dancer and instructor Shuo Zhang breaks down language barriers in Dance and Poetry, combining ancient Chinese poems and classical Chinese dance to create a rich visual language. An interactive kids’ comedy show led by three “bin-vestigators”, Holy Bin Amoley will have the entire family laughing as they learning to look at rubbish in a whole new light.
Celebrating the golden age of pop, The 60 Four: In Concert presents the biggest hits of the 60s with slick moves, tight four-part harmonies and fabulous matching costumes accompanied by a red hot nine-piece band. And if you think bigger is better, you’ll love A Movie Night with Fusion Pops Orchestra, when the stage is packed with 16 singers and 40 piece orchestra running through instantly recognisable tunes from a host of classic movies.
Odeon Theatre
The home of Australian Dance Theatre will host some of the nation’s finest contemporary dancers for the stunning Declivity. An intensely physical work inspired by Edward Allen Poe’s gothic horror stories, the piece was created in collaboration with a literature professor and the run includes a masterclass in contemporary technique and choreography on Saturday March 19.
The Odeon also hosts the Adelaide Festival with Girls & Boys, featuring acclaimed actress Justine Clark (Love My Way, All Saints, Tangle) in a searing one woman examination of gender dynamics that deftly balances comedy and drama.
Norwood Hotel
A bumper crop of shows at this historic live music venue is led by two Adelaide icons as psych rock stalwarts The Love Mussels attempt to Save The World with their hippy trippy psychedelic hits and five original members of Buffalo Drive celebrate the group’s evolution from acoustic folk to classic 70s rock. Läther salutes another icon of that era by recreating the freethinking, genre-defying hits (and a few obscurities) of Frank Zappa.
The dancefloor will be packed when Finger Bun get the party started with a two hour set of old school favourites in 80's Mixtape Vol. 2, and you can expect to see plenty of leg warmers and lycra thanks to the prizes for best 80s costumes. If you want to venture a bit further back in time, K&N Brass and guest vocalist Luke Thompson recreate the glamour of the Great American Songbook with classic big band and Broadway tunes for you to dance the night away to.
