Denim + Cloth Share Their Top Autumn Styling Tips

09/05/2023

With a noticeable chill starting to creep into the air, it’s clear that summer is well and truly over. But that doesn’t mean you have to go into hibernation – with a bit of planning you can stay warm and look good all through the cooler months. Whether it’s learning to layer, striking the right tone or balancing comfort with style, Denim + Cloth’s tips will have you turning heads all season long.

Learn To Layer

Autumn conditions can be deceptive, as beautiful sun-soaked days transform into seriously chilly nights. It means that a single jacket won’t cut it in all situations. Instead, the secret to being ready for whatever the season throws at you is layering, which will keep you comfortable whether you’re hitting the clubs, enjoying a day at the footy or heading to the hills for a wine tour.

Denim + Cloth manager Tom Timmins recommends starting with a Neuw tee as a base layer, adding a button up Academy overshirt and finishing with a thicker coach jacket. “Twill works really well in autumn and has a nice rugged look,” he suggests. “And having that overshirt means you can take a layer off when you head inside but still maintain the perfect temperature.”

Tone Things Down

Adopting multiple layers means you need to put a little bit of thought into your outfit to make sure that all the elements work together. Fortunately, Timmins has seen the rising popularity of overshirting coincide with a move away from patterns that could potentially clash. “Rather than stripes, which are hard to match with, we’re seeing plenty of logos and base colours that tend to fit most people well.”

In autumn, he suggests steering away from bright colours and going for earthier tones that suit the season – olive, tan, charcoal and light blue all go well with each other, and make it easy to select matching pants with a similar colour scheme.

Let Loose

True to their name, Denim + Cloth stocks plenty of jeans. While lighter coloured denim has been really big lately, Timmins expects to see more dark blues and blacks as we head into winter. And when it comes to choosing the right jeans, fit is every bit as important as colour. “The last couple of years have taught us how important it is to be comfortable, and the skinny fit is definitely on the way out,” he says.

You’ll often catch the store manager rocking a pair of Nudie Jeans that are still going strong after 13 years – the lifetime warranty means customers can bring them in to be repaired if they rip – and there has also been a resurgence in chinos and cargos with a looser fit. That trend towards more comfortable options continues up top with baggy tees that hang loose off the shoulder, while footwear is following a similar path as tight-fitting sneakers give way to roomier boots that round out the classic look.
