As the daughter, niece and cousin of professional dentists, Dr Delia Yeak spent much of her youth in and around dental clinics. But once she joined their ranks she became too aware that not everybody feels as comfortable in that environment. “I’ve been a dentist for ten years,” she says, “and in that time I’ve had so many patients tell me how scary and daunting most dental clinics are.”

But Dr Yeak also knows that delaying a trip to the dentist can result in discomfort or even serious health complications. So when she started her own practice late last year, she knew she wanted to offer a gentler, more welcoming experience for her customers. 

As the owner and Principal Dentist of Smile Society, Dr Yeak is on a mission to give everyone the dental care they deserve at her brand new Parade location (Shop 12, Level 1/168 The Parade (part of new Norwood Mall)). The first step was creating an inviting, custom-built space that is light years away from the sterility of most clinics. “I added some curves to soften the interior and filled it with sounds and smells that make people want to step inside,” she explains. “We play calming indie music so you don’t hear the news – or drills – in the background, and we have a new scent every four weeks. My favourite right now is the salted caramel candle that makes it smell like a Peter Alexander shop when you come in.”

As well as creating a more welcoming environment, Dr Yeak sees patients in full hour blocks so they never feel rushed and shares photos and X-rays so that they fully understand what she’s doing. Once she gets to work, “I pride myself on being gentle with my treatment. But if patients are suffering from severe anxiety, we can also provide IV sedation so they can have all their treatment done while they’re under. 

Last, but certainly not least, Dr Yeak offers a No Wait Guarantee for every patient. “I hate waiting areas for any appointment – I think everyone does,” she says. “And most health professionals have a reputation for being late.
