Passion for Volunteering

After all, it was his volunteering role to build and maintain various BMX tracks in
the Adelaide CBD which ignited his love for volunteering.
“For the past 15 years my hobby has been leading a group of Volunteers to build and
maintain the BMX tracks,” Nigel says.
“In 2020, COVID-19 impacted my long-term career in the corporate travel sector and I felt it was a good time to pursue something fresh and different.”
“Through the volunteering I was doing at the BMX track, I developed an interest in Local Government and how Councils work with, and for, the community.”
“I decided working in a Council was what I wanted to do, and fortunately my background in volunteering combined with my transferable skillset from my previous position made for, what I felt was, a perfect fit for the position of Coordinator, Volunteer Services.”
In November 2022, Nigel commenced at the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters as the Coordinator, Volunteer Services.
“It is a very diverse role and I wear many hats! I want to learn and be the best I can be, so I constantly challenge myself to grow and develop.”
The Council currently has 220 Volunteers and Nigel says his goal is to ensure that each Volunteer is equipped with the right skill set to confidently go about their role in our City.
“I love getting to know Volunteers and what motivates them to volunteer and what I can I do to make their lives easier."
"I have found from the Mayor to the Chief Executive Officer to program coordinators, and everyone in between, there is a strong passion for volunteering at the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters.”
“Staff and Elected Members truly value our Volunteers and go to great efforts to make them feel equally included in the organisation.”
Reflecting on his past career in the travel sector, “I am very happy now, but if there was one thing I truly miss, it would be the free business class flights.” Nigel says with a cheeky grin.
