Voices, Oysters and Lifesaving Laughs: Three Can’t Miss Talks At This Year’s Raising The Bar
02/08/2024
Every year, Raising The Bar assembles a fascinating collection of thought leaders, topical experts and first-time speakers for a series of informal talks in bars. All across the city of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters, they bring audiences together as they tackle a range of under-discussed topics and blow them wide open.
When the global event series returns on Tuesday, August 6, local residents will be able to choose from 20 captivating sessions in ten bars across the council area. Whether you’re seeking self-development, looking for some interesting dinner party topics or simply seeking a few laughs, Raising The Bar has you covered. And luckily, there’s still time to register – here are several events not to miss this year.
Trust Your Gut
Most people don’t want to talk about cancer, and that goes double for bowel cancer. But sometimes we don’t have a choice. Jodi Lee Foundation Ambassadors Kellie Finlayson and Sophie Edwards were both diagnosed with bowel cancer as young mothers, and they both know that this killer is even more deadly when it works in silence. It’s why they started their Sh!t Talkers podcast to chart their own journeys and raise bowel cancer awareness. Expect some laughs, perhaps a few tears and potentially lifesaving information as they discuss a disease that has become Australia’s second deadliest cancer despite being very treatable if detected early.
8:00 pm at The Suburban Brew, 26/30 Provident Ave, Glynde SA 5070
Vocal Chords
Whether you greet the world with a relaxed drawl, a nasal twang or a hardcore strayan accent, everyone has a unique voice. And we use them so often that it’s easy to forget the power that each of us holds. You don’t need the measured cadence of Morgan Freeman or David Attenborough to be taken seriously, but the way you use your voice influences how people see as well as hear you, and can have a huge effect on the way we perceive ourselves. Specialist vocal coach Tania Savelli has spent two decades helping musicians, actors and TV personalities find their voices, and will share some observations on how speaking your truth can improve your self-confidence, communication skills and long-term career prospects.

Pearls of Wisdom
When Europeans first arrived in Australia, they pulled up load after load of Sydney rock oysters and burned them for lime and mortar to use in buildings. In Broome, iridescent pearl oyster shells were so important locally it’s said the town was “built on buttons.” And today, you’ll find everything from slow-growing native angasis to plump Pacific oysters on menus across the country. But these humble bivalves are far more than simply a tasty treat. Each oyster can filter up to 100 litres of water a day, making them crucial to the health of our waters. And with less than 1% of the pre-colonial population remaining, there’s a lot of work to be done to restore the kidneys of the ocean. Marine biologist Dominic McAfee examines the strange life of the oyster, and how he is working to restore Australia’s lost oyster beds.
Reversing extinction; repairing the sea for a brighter future
