Working in local government may not seem like the natural path for someone with an artistic background, but for Emma Comley, the role of Arts Officer for the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has been a perfect fit. With experience as a photographer, graphic designer, gallery assistant, art installer, and artist, Emma’s creative journey has prepared her well for this position.

At the heart of her work is collaborating with local artists to bring their visions to life, especially within The Gallery at the St Peters Town Hall Complex. Each new exhibition transforms the space to suit the artist's needs, and Emma thrives on this dynamic aspect of her role.

“I love the process of installing an exhibition and the attention to detail that goes with it,” she says. The excitement of reinventing the space with each new installation keeps her motivated and inspired.

“Every encounter I’ve had with local creatives has been positive,” Emma reflects. She’s discovered that artists, studios, and creative groups in the City are eager to connect and collaborate with the Council, enriching both the arts and the broader community.

Emma believes the arts sector is a vibrant space for learning and connection. She encourages everyone to take advantage of available opportunities. “Go out and meet people, attend exhibition openings, and visit artist studios,” she advises. “Talk to artists about their projects and find out how you can get involved.”

Her passion for the arts is infectious, and she hopes to inspire others to reconnect with their creative selves, whether by exploring their own artistic talents or participating in community art initiatives. For Emma, being an Arts Officer is more than a job; it’s about fostering creativity and connection, making every day a rewarding experience.
