Celebrating Creativity: Introducing ‘Sweat’ Issue 13 by the Kensington & Norwood Writers’ Group

02/06/2025

For more than 30 years, the Kensington & Norwood Writers’ Group (KNWG) has been a cornerstone of Adelaide’s literary community.

As South Australia’s oldest writers’ collective, they have nurtured countless voices, championed creative exploration and provided a supportive space for writers of all levels.

Whether you’re penning your first story, experimenting with poetry, or putting the final touches on a novel, their doors (and ears) are always open. Their sessions are inclusive and flexible: contribute work, receive feedback—or simply listen and be inspired.

This year, they are proud to announce the release of Issue 13 of their journal. This one is entitled ‘Sweat’. It is a 200-page celebration of original works by their talented members.

Each edition of the journal reflects its group’s mission to stretch creative muscles, explore diverse genres, improve craft and support one another through every stage of the writing journey.

In this issue, you’ll meet an incredible line-up of contributors:

  • Rose Boswell, writer, mother, and seeker of life’s inner and outer realms, exploring themes of love and connection.
  • Candy Gray, a talented artist who tells of her travels as a young traveller, alone in the non-English speaking world.
  • Steve Davey, a revolutionary at heart, writes fiction that’s spare, strange, and stirring.
  • Stephanie Russell, a writer of wide-ranging themes, genres, and personal truths—infused with soul and curiosity.
  • Jane Russell, a sci-fi and fantasy storyteller with a knack for the whimsically futuristic and the emotionally profound.
  • Sara Abend-Sims, an award-winning poet whose upcoming hybrid work blends short stories and novella.
  • Nike Azoros, a prolific writer who believes writers need one another—and has made KNWG her creative home since 2007.
  • Anne Chappel, charting a writing path from travel diaries to novels about Africa and family legacy.
  • Lesley Charlesworth, writing with a focus on resilience and character, and a love of disappearing into the bush for inspiration.
  • Darrell Coggins, painter, musician, and poet—his creative expression flows across multiple forms.
  • Andrew Piper, a former maths teacher with a passion for Raymond Carver and Alice Munro, now boldly stepping into poetry and short fiction.
  • Cary Hamlyn is an Adelaide prize-winning poet who tells of life in all its complexity.
  • Jules Leigh-Koch is a poet whose perception of the world and precise imagery has captivated his readers.
  • David Wright enjoys writing in a wide range of genres: stories for children, crime fiction, and short stories.
  • Frank Dee entertains with his iconoclastic life view. His crime stories always captivate his audience.
  • Juliette Cerin is a poet who explores the simple pleasures of life.
  • Lisa Crawford is a gardener and a poet who delights in the beauty of nature.

These writers make ‘Sweat’ a dynamic tapestry of voices—raw, refined and real.
