Five minutes with Andrew from the Norwood Tennis Club

12/08/2025

Celebrating community, connection and staying active through sport.

At the heart of Norwood's vibrant community is the Norwood Tennis Club – a place where people of all ages come together to play, connect and grow.

We sat down with Andrew Tasiopoulos, President, to find out more about the role tennis plays in community life and how the club is fostering fun, fitness and friendships on and off the court.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about the history of the club?

A:  The Norwood Tennis Club at Buttery Reserve has been a part of the community for over 80 years. What started as a small group of local enthusiasts has grown into a dynamic hub with members ranging from juniors just learning to play, right through to seniors who’ve been hitting the court for decades.

Q: Why do you think tennis remains such a popular sport in the community?

A:  Tennis is one of those timeless sports that’s accessible to people of all ages and skill levels. It keeps you physically fit, but also mentally sharp. Whether you're playing a competitive match or just having a casual hit, there’s always something to gain – and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun.

Q: Sport is clearly important for physical health, but how does the club support mental wellbeing and social connection?

A: Our club isn’t just about competition – it’s about community. We run social tennis on Tuesday evening and have functions that encourage interaction and friendships. Many of our members have formed strong bonds here. It’s a space where people can unwind, feel supported, and belong.

Q: How can people get involved if they’re new to tennis or unsure where to start?

A: We love welcoming new members! We offer social club memberships, casual court hire, Tuesday night social tennis and free trial days so people can get a feel for the club without pressure. You don’t need to be the next Ash Barty or Alex De Minaur to join – just bring your enthusiasm. Our team is here to support players at every stage.

Q: What would you say to someone who’s thinking about joining but hasn’t taken the plunge yet?

A: Give it a go! You might surprise yourself. Being part of a local sports club like ours goes beyond the game – it’s about being active, staying connected, and doing something positive for yourself. Plus, you’ll meet some fantastic people along the way.

Q: What’s on the horizon for the club in the coming months?

A: Coming up soon is our Open Day on Saturday 30 August from 1-3pm.  Our committee will be there to welcome you. Bring your racquet for a hit and meet the team.
