Top tips to stay cool in summer

06/01/2026

Adelaide summers are known for soaring temperatures and the occasional heatwave, so taking steps to protect yourself from heat‑related illness is essential.

Make the most of our Libraries

No air conditioning at home? Drop into one of our three libraries for a refreshing break from the heat. Just remember to check opening hours before you head out.

Cool off at Norwood Swimming Centre

The Norwood Swimming Centre keeps its pools at a comfortable 27°C and offers plenty of shaded areas — a perfect spot to relax, swim and stay cool.

Hydrate and be sun smart

A few simple habits can make a big difference on extreme‑heat days:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid caffeinated, alcoholic or fizzy drinks
  • Stay out of direct sunlight where possible
  • Spend time in cool or air‑conditioned spaces
  • If you need to be outdoors, wear protective clothing, sunscreen and a hat.

Look out for those most at risk

Babies, young children, older adults and pets are especially vulnerable to heat. Check in on family, friends and neighbours during hot weather.
