A wall with a story: Norwood Primary School mural brings community to life
31/03/2026
A vibrant new mural at Norwood Primary School is transforming more than just a wall, it’s bringing together creativity, community and a shared sense of place.
The laneway leading into Norwood Oval now features a stunning new mural, painted by renowned South Australian muralist Nicky Create.
Supported through Council Community Grant funding, the project is a strong example of what can be achieved when local government, artists and schools collaborate with a shared vision.
Local mural artist Nicky, who has been part of Adelaide’s street art scene for more than nine years, was approached for the project after being discovered through the Norwood art directory and word of mouth.
The concept for the mural was shaped by the Norwood Primary School students themselves.
Working alongside their teachers, students were invited to reflect on the natural environment around their school, identifying local flowers, birds and colours, and sharing how these elements make them feel.
Their ideas became the foundation for a design that softens the school’s built environment while celebrating the beauty of its surroundings.
The result is a mural that feels deeply personal to the school community.
From native flora to the inclusion of a much-loved one-legged magpie that frequents the school grounds, the artwork captures the stories and everyday moments that make the space unique.
Principal Melissa Evans said the collaboration was a meaningful experience for students.
“It was a pleasure collaborating with Nicky.
“Our students had the opportunity to share their ideas and highlight what matters most to them and how they see our school.
“Nicky thoughtfully included these contributions and the students thoroughly enjoyed following the journey of her work from its beginnings to completion.”
Street art projects like this offer far-reaching benefits beyond their visual appeal.
By involving local artists and young people in the creative process, they help foster a sense of pride, strengthen neighbourhood identity and create spaces that feel welcoming and connected.
As Nicky explains, murals have the power to shift how people experience a place.
Bringing colour, energy and a renewed sense of belonging.
This project stands as a testament to the impact of collaborative, community-led initiatives, where investment in local creativity not only enhances public spaces, but also leaves a lasting impression on those who use them every day.
