Celebrating the centenary of Don Dunstan

In 2026, we mark 100 years since the birth of Don Dunstan, one of South Australia's most influential leaders and one of Norwood's most prolific residents.

A passionate reformer, advocate for social justice and champion of the arts, Dunstan helped transform South Australia during the 1960s and 1970s through landmark reforms that reshaped the state's cultural and social identity.

His leadership championed multiculturalism, Aboriginal land rights, anti-discrimination legislation, heritage protection, environmental reform, electoral reform and support for the arts, helping establish South Australia as a progressive and creative leader.

To mark the centenary of his birth, Don Dunstan: 100 Years will feature a major exhibition and diverse program of free and ticketed events.

Experience the legacy

Don Dunstan: 100 Years is a special exhibition and program of events celebrating Dunstan's remarkable life, legacy and vision, and his lasting connection to Norwood.

Presented in The Gallery at St Peters Town Hall Complex from 5 September to 7 November 2026, the exhibition invites visitors to step into the Dunstan era and reflect on the ideas, courage and creativity of a leader whose vision continues to shape South Australia today.

Thanks to the generosity of Dunstan's widower, Steven Cheng, the exhibition features personal items from Don Dunstan's Norwood home, offering a unique glimpse into his life beyond politics.

A Seat at Don's Table

Step inside a reimagining of Don Dunstan’s iconic dining room for an intimate two-part conversation series bringing together leading voices from South Australia’s political, cultural, culinary and arts communities. Inspired by Dunstan’s spirit, intellect and hospitality, the program explores his life, legacy and enduring impact on South Australian society.

  Join Brian Parkes, CEO of JamFactory, and special guests for a conversation about JamFactory’s remarkable story. Established in 1973 through the vision and support of Don Dunstan’s government, JamFactory has gone on to become one of Australia’s leading centres for craft and design. The conversation will also explore Dunstan’s later role as Chair from 1987–1990.

  Join Greg Mackie OAM and a panel of special guests for a conversation sharing stories and reflections on the impact of Don Dunstan’s decade of reform. Through personal and professional experiences, the panel will explore the Dunstan era and beyond, offering insights into Dunstan the person, his legacy and what remains today.
